CLEAR CALCULATION METHODOLOGY

How this Zakat calculator works

This calculator estimates Zakat for common monetary and business assets. It adds the zakatable values you enter, subtracts the liabilities you identify as deductible, and compares the result with your selected nisab.

Net zakatable wealth=Total zakatable assets−Permitted liabilities
Zakat due=Net zakatable wealth×2.5% lunar / 2.577% solar

The nisab is a threshold, not a tax-free allowance. If your qualifying net wealth reaches the threshold after the relevant holding period, the selected rate applies to the full net amount.

What is the Zakat nisab?

Nisab is the minimum qualifying wealth threshold. Widely used measures are the current value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Other recognised opinions use different weights, including 85 grams of gold and 595 grams of silver, so the weight fields are editable.

The calculator never guesses today’s gold or silver price. Select your currency and enter a current price per gram from a reliable local source. You may also choose a custom threshold supplied by an authority you trust.

Gold or silver?

Schools and organisations differ on which standard to use, particularly where a person owns mixed assets. This tool provides both without choosing a religious opinion for you.

What should you include?

Common zakatable assets

  • Cash at home and in bank accounts
  • Zakatable gold and silver
  • Zakatable investments and digital assets
  • Business cash, trading stock and collectible receivables
  • Money owed to you that you reasonably expect to recover

Potential deductions

  • Debts that are presently due
  • Current business liabilities
  • Bills and taxes presently payable
  • Other short-term liabilities permitted by your guidance

Treatment can differ for personal jewellery, pensions, long-term debt, property, shares and business holdings. Enter only values that match the opinion you follow. This tool does not cover agricultural produce, livestock, minerals or treasure, which may use other rules.

Lunar year versus solar year

The traditional Zakat year is lunar, approximately 354 days, with a rate of 2.5%. A solar year is longer. Some contemporary guidance uses about 2.577% when accounts are consistently prepared on a solar-year basis. Choose the basis that matches your calculation period rather than switching between them for a lower result.

Worked Zakat calculation example

Assets$11,000
Permitted liabilities− $1,000
Net wealth$10,000
Custom nisab in example$6,000
Lunar-year Zakat$10,000 × 2.5% = $250

Because $10,000 is above the $6,000 example threshold, the 2.5% rate applies to the whole $10,000 net amount. The example threshold is illustrative only; use a current metal value or trusted custom threshold for your own calculation.

Zakat calculator FAQs

How is Zakat calculated?

Add your zakatable assets, subtract liabilities that your trusted scholarly guidance permits, and compare the net amount with your chosen nisab. If the net amount meets or exceeds the nisab after the required holding period, this calculator applies 2.5% for a lunar year or 2.577% for a consistently used solar year.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Recognised scholarly approaches differ. Some people use the silver standard, some use the gold standard, and the appropriate choice can depend on school of thought and circumstances. Select the method you follow and confirm it with a qualified scholar when unsure.

Why must I enter the metal price?

Gold and silver prices change continuously and vary by currency and market. Enter a current price per gram from a reliable local source so the nisab is not based on an outdated value.

Is Zakat charged only on wealth above the nisab?

No. The nisab is an eligibility threshold. Once qualifying net wealth meets or exceeds it, the applicable rate is calculated on the full net zakatable amount, not only the excess above the threshold.

Does this calculator decide whether personal jewellery is zakatable?

No. Scholarly rulings on personal-use jewellery differ. Include only the value that is zakatable under the opinion you follow, and seek qualified advice for valuable or mixed-use jewellery.

Can I calculate Zakat using a solar year?

The traditional calculation follows a lunar year and uses 2.5%. If you consistently account by a solar year, some guidance uses approximately 2.577% to account for the longer period. This calculator provides both options.

Does this cover crops, livestock or mined treasure?

No. This tool is designed for common monetary and business assets. Agricultural produce, livestock, minerals and similar categories may have different thresholds and rates and need specialist guidance.
