QPI Calculator

Calculate your semester Quality Point Index, project cumulative QPI, and plan the average needed for a target.

Check your school’s handbookGrade-point values, excluded courses, repeats and rounding rules vary. This result is an unofficial planning estimate.

The menu uses a common 4.0 QPI scale. Choose Custom when your institution assigns a different point value.

CLEAR CALCULATION METHOD

How to calculate QPI

Quality Point Index is a weighted average. A course’s contribution depends on both its grade-point value and its number of credit units.

Course quality points

Grade point × course units

Total quality points

Σ(course quality points)

Quality Point Index

QPI = total quality points ÷ counted units

Do not average the letter grades or grade points directly when courses have different unit values. A four-unit course carries twice the weight of a two-unit course.

QPI grade-point scale

The calculator starts with a common QPI scale of A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0. Ateneo de Davao University publishes this mapping and defines QPI as the sum of each course’s grade-point equivalent multiplied by its units, divided by total units. Other institutions can use different mappings or policies.

Use Custom when your value is differentSelect “Custom point value” for any course, then type the exact numerical equivalent from your institution’s official grading policy.

Choose “Excluded / non-QPI” only when the institution explicitly excludes that course or mark. Pass/fail, withdrawal, transfer-credit, PE, NSTP and repeated-course treatment is institution-specific.

Cumulative QPI and target planning

Current cumulative quality points equal current QPI multiplied by previously completed counted units. The projected cumulative calculation then combines those totals with the courses entered:

Projected QPI = (current QPI × completed units + new quality points) ÷ (completed units + new units)

For a target cumulative QPI after the entered term:

Required term QPI = [target × (completed units + new units) − current QPI × completed units] ÷ new units

If the required term QPI is above the highest grade point available at your institution, the target cannot be reached within only the entered courses. Try a longer planning horizon and confirm repeat-course or replacement rules.

Worked QPI calculation example

Calculus3 units × 4.0 = 12.0
Literature3 units × 3.5 = 10.5
Chemistry4 units × 3.0 = 12.0
Laboratory1 unit × 4.0 = 4.0
PE2 units, excluded in this example
Totals38.5 quality points ÷ 11 counted units
Semester QPI3.50

With a previous 3.25 QPI over 36 units, the projected cumulative QPI is 3.31. Reaching 3.35 after this term would require about 3.68.

Use “Load example” to reproduce the course breakdown. The example’s exclusion is illustrative only; use your institution’s actual rules.

QPI calculation checks

Use final grade points

Enter the official grade-point equivalent, not a raw percentage, unless your institution directly defines percentage points for QPI.

Confirm counted units

Use the credit units that count toward the index, including any institutional rule for laboratories or partial-credit courses.

Review exclusions

Check pass/fail, withdrawn, transferred, repeated and non-academic courses against the current handbook.

Match rounding rules

This calculator displays two decimals, but an institution may retain more digits, round, or truncate at a specified stage.

QPI and GPA: what is the difference?

QPI and GPA commonly describe the same mathematical idea: a credit-weighted average of numerical grade values. The important difference is institutional policy, not the label. A school may use “QPI,” “GPA,” or “QPA” while defining its own point scale, exclusions, repeat rules and precision.

QPI calculator FAQs

What does QPI mean?

QPI usually means Quality Point Index. It summarizes academic performance as a credit-weighted average of the grade-point values earned in counted courses.

How is QPI calculated?

Multiply each course grade point by its credit units, add those quality points, and divide by the total units included in the calculation.

Is QPI the same as GPA?

Both commonly use a credit-weighted grade-point calculation. The name, grading scale, included courses, repeat policy and rounding rules can differ by institution.

Why are course units important?

QPI is weighted by units. A four-unit course contributes twice as much to the index as a two-unit course with the same grade-point value.

Which grading scale does this calculator use?

The grade menu provides a common 4.0 QPI scale: A 4.0, B+ 3.5, B 3.0, C+ 2.5, C 2.0, D 1.0 and F 0. Use Custom if your school assigns another value.

Can pass/fail, withdrawn or non-credit courses be excluded?

Yes. Choose Excluded or non-QPI for a course that your institution does not count. Confirm every exclusion with the official academic handbook.

How is projected cumulative QPI calculated?

Previous quality points are current cumulative QPI multiplied by completed counted units. The new term’s quality points and units are added before dividing by the new cumulative unit total.

How does the target QPI planner work?

It calculates the semester QPI required across the courses entered to reach the selected cumulative target after those courses are completed.

Why can my official QPI differ?

Institutions may use different point values, rounding or truncation rules, repeat-course treatment and policies for withdrawals, failures, transferred credit, PE, NSTP or pass/fail courses.

Does the calculator store my grades?

No. The calculation runs locally in the browser, and the plugin does not submit or store course or grade information.
