How the PAMOL calculator works

This tool is limited to New Zealand PAMOL children’s suspension labelled 250 mg of paracetamol in 5 mL. It does not calculate another brand, infant preparation from another country, 120 mg/5 mL liquid, tablets or modified-release medicine.

  1. Confirm the bottle strength. The concentration must read 250 mg/5 mL.
  2. Check age and weight.Children under three months require healthcare advice before paracetamol.
  3. Check recent doses. No other paracetamol, at least four hours since the last dose, and fewer than four doses in 24 hours.
  4. Look up the volume. The result comes from the manufacturer’s published weight-band chart below.

Important paracetamol safety checks

01

Never combine products

Cold, flu and pain medicines can contain paracetamol. Do not give PAMOL with another paracetamol-containing product.

02

Use the supplied syringe

Measure the exact millilitre volume with a medicine syringe, not a kitchen teaspoon.

03

Keep a written dose record

Record the time and amount immediately so another caregiver does not repeat the dose.

04

Act immediately after an error

Call 0800 POISON (0800 764 766) straight away after a possible overdose, even when the child seems well.

PAMOL calculator FAQs

What strength of PAMOL does this calculator use?

It is limited to New Zealand PAMOL children’s paracetamol suspension labelled 250 mg in 5 mL, which equals 50 mg per mL. Do not use the result for a different strength or product.

Is a PAMOL dose based on weight or age?

The published guidance says to use the child’s body weight rather than age. This calculator accepts whole kilograms and looks up the matching weight band from the published PAMOL chart.

Can I use this calculator for a baby under three months?

No. The calculator blocks use for babies under three months and directs the caregiver to a healthcare professional before giving paracetamol.

How often can children’s PAMOL be given?

The published guidance says a dose may be given every 4 to 6 hours when required, with no more than 4 doses in 24 hours. The calculator blocks a further dose when less than 4 hours have passed or 4 doses have already been entered.

Can PAMOL be given with another medicine containing paracetamol?

No. Do not combine it with another paracetamol-containing medicine. Check cold, flu and pain products carefully, and ask a pharmacist if the ingredients are unclear.

What should I use to measure the liquid?

Use the oral syringe supplied with the pack or another suitable medicine-measuring device. A kitchen spoon is not accurate enough for measuring medicine.

What if I may have given too much paracetamol?

Call the New Zealand National Poisons Centre immediately on 0800 POISON (0800 764 766), or go to hospital, even if the child appears well. In an emergency call 111.

Can PAMOL be used for more than 48 hours?

Do not continue for more than 48 hours unless a healthcare professional advises it. Seek advice if symptoms persist, worsen or you are worried about the child.

Is this calculator affiliated with PAMOL?

No. This is an independently produced chart-checking tool. PAMOL is a registered trade mark of its owner. Always read and follow the current product label.
